The scenery when we woke up this morning was so very different from what we had been seeing. It reminded us both of the American Southwest...especially Nevada/Arizona. Not red enough for Utah or much of Colorado, though some red shows at the bottom of one formation.
The landscape was in general a bit more "friendly" than previous stops, so there was a "perimeter hike"--meaning that the expedition team spread out with their flare guns and rifles, and hikers were free to wander anywhere within that perimeter. Some stuck to the beach, while others climbed as high as was permitted.
This was the last excursion for the first segment of our cruise. We're very sorry not to have felt healthy enough to get out into the landscape a lot more than we did, and are hoping for better conditions during the circumnavigation of Svalbard.
